Proper preparation is key to a successful and enjoyable Kilimanjaro climb
While technical climbing skills are not required, excellent physical fitness is essential. We recommend 3-6 months of preparation including:
Clothing (Layering System): Moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, waterproof outer shell, down jacket for summit
Footwear: Well-broken-in hiking boots (waterproof), comfortable camp shoes, moisture-wicking socks
Equipment: 4-season sleeping bag (-10°C rating), sleeping pad, trekking poles, headlamp with extra batteries
Accessories: Sunglasses (UV protection), warm hat, gloves (liner and insulated), buff/neck gaiter
Our itineraries are designed with acclimatization in mind. We follow the "climb high, sleep low" principle and include extra days on most routes. We monitor all climbers with daily health checks and pulse oximeter readings. Our guides are trained to recognize altitude sickness symptoms and respond appropriately, with portable oxygen available for emergencies.
Essential information for your Kilimanjaro climb
The best climbing seasons are January to mid-March and June to October. January-March offers clearer skies but can be colder. June-October has slightly cooler temperatures and less precipitation. April-May and November are rainy seasons with fewer crowds but more challenging conditions. December offers a short window between rains.
Kilimanjaro is a non-technical climb, meaning no special equipment or climbing skills are required. However, it is physically demanding due to the altitude and duration. Success depends more on proper acclimatization and fitness than technical ability. We recommend choosing longer routes (7-8 days) for better acclimatization and higher success rates.
The minimum age set by Kilimanjaro National Park is 10 years old. We generally recommend a minimum age of 15 for the physical and mental demands. There's no upper age limit - we've successfully guided climbers in their 70s. The key factors are physical fitness, health, and proper preparation regardless of age.
Our guides are trained to recognize symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue). We monitor all climbers daily with pulse oximeters. Mild symptoms are managed with rest, hydration, and slower ascent. For moderate symptoms, we may administer oxygen and consider descent. Severe symptoms require immediate descent - we carry portable stretchers for emergency evacuations.
